Kölner Colnasol Information & Instructions

 

Overview

Kolner Colnasol the adhesive used as part of the KGGG Gilding System. It is applied to the Fond before gilding gold leaf.

 

Colnasol comes in a plastic container that contains 10 grams of Colnasol gel.   Colnasol is an animal hide glue adhesive in a concentrated form.  It must be mixed with hot water to dissolve the gel and turn it into a usable adhesive size.    

 

We also offer Kolner Colnafix which is comes pre-mixed and ready-to-use.

 

Preparation
To create the adhesive, mix 10 grams of Colnasol gel with 500 ml of hot (NOT boiling) water until it is completely dissolved.  

 

You can also create smaller amounts of adhesive with 100ml of water for every 1g of Colnasol. For example: 5 grams of Colnasol gel and 250 ml of hot water.     

 

Application
Colnasol is best applied generously with a sizing brush before gold leaf is applied.  

 

Storage

Keep the container tightly closed and avoid frost or excessive heat.   Keep refrigerated to extend its shelf life, which is about 2-3 months before being mixed with water, and about 6 weeks after it has been mixed with water.

SAFETY

Colnasol is not toxic, but could cause skin or eye irritation. It should be kept away from food and drink. Keep out of reach of children.
