Kölner Ceramic Size Gel KT-5-HV Information & Instructions
USAGE OVERVIEW:
Kolner Ceramic Size Gel KT-5-hv is a unique high gloss gilding water base size that allow you to repair chipped or cracked porcelain, ceramics or china. It is applied as a gel and works best with transfer leaf. It is similar to Ceramic KT-5. A mirror-like shine can be achieved by gently polishing with a Kolner Tissue.
If the ceramic surface is very porous, you may want to first seal the surface with diluted gel, or standard Ceramic Size (KT-5) first. Ceramic Gel can then applied after the sealed surface has compeltely dried. Ceramic gel is added as needed to fill in the chip or crack. Ceramic size is water based so a small amount of water can be added to smooth out the base and fill in any small porous areas before the ceramic gel is applied. The use of KT-5HV gel reduces the number of layers needed to fill the defect.
Not for outdoor use.
APPLICATION OF CERAMIC SIZE:
The surface should be clean, free of any dirt, dust or residue, and completely dry. Ceramic Gel Size is applied with a small knife or spatula. Allow it to set for about four hours before gilding. Set time depends on thickness of application. Make sure that all layers are absolutely dry before gilding!
When building up an area, up to 1mm of gel can be added in each layer. Layers should be compeltely dry, with a minium of two hours, before the next layer is added.
APPLICATION OF THE LEAF:
Lay the leaf on the Ceramic Size and gently apply pressure to the transfer tissue paper, pushing the gold down into the size. It is important to push the gold leaf down into the Ceramic Size. After removing the tissue paper, it can be used to again push down lightly to ensure that the gold is properly adhered. A Kolner Tissue can be used to polish the gold by gently rubbing in one direction, which will enhance the brightness of the gold. If loose leaf is used, it is best to lay the leaf onto the surface and then place old transfer paper over the gold leaf and apply pressure to push the gold into the Ceramic Size.
KT-5 and KT-5hv can be mixed and can be thinned with water. Dry film can be removed with ammonia and water.
Gilded surfaces are grip and water resistant, but alkaline cleaners or hot water can cause damage to the gilded area.
Brushes and tools can be cleaned with soap and water.
Storage
