Primer Basecoat Sealer Information & Instructions
Primer Basecoat Sealer is an oil base product designed to fill and seal porous surfaces on substrates like wood, stone and prepare metal for gilding. When properly used, this product will produce a smooth surface that requires very little or no sanding. It is available in yellow, red and gray.
Usage Overview:
1. Preparing the item to be gilded is the key to a good gilding job. The substrate surface must be clean and free of oils, wax, fingerprints and dust. Primer Sealer can be applied with a brush, roller or by spraying. After the primer is applied to the item to be gilded, it should be sanded and made smooth, filling in any porous areas. Make sure that the primer is compatible with the substrate.
2. Primer Basecoat Sealer can be used at the consistency provided by the manufacturer. Thinning the Primer Basecoat Sealer will a small amount of mineral spirits will help reduce or eliminate the need for sanding. Porous surfaces may require two or more coats. Multiple thin coats will produce better results than thicker coats. Allow at least 4 hours of drying between coats, sand between coats.
3. As with any paint or coating, the primer/sealer should be mixed prior to use.
4. If brushing, any good quality natural bristle brush should be used, the self-leveling properties of the product eliminate the need to over brush the coating. If rolling, use a high quality short nap roller cover. When spraying, follow the equipment manufacturer recommendations.
Miscellaneous Information
A. Coverage is about 300 square feet per gallon, 75 square feet for a quart, 35 square feet per pint, 18 square feet per half-pint, and 9 square feet for a quarter pint.
B. Clean up wet product with mineral spirits.
C. A temperature of 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit and a relative humidity of 40-60% will yield the best results.
